Since Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff are not known for their writing abilities and not really professional authors, I wasn't expecting it to be particularly good, but I was wrong. It was very well written and very funny and entertaining up until the last few pages when Dan lost his beloved Gracie.
But, this is a story of serendipitywhen you find something wonderful that you weren't looking for. Dan never in his wildest dreams thought he and his partner Mark would stumble on a wildly successful business when he brought Gracie home as a puppy. Because she was a picky eater, her veterinarian suggested to Dan that he start cooking her food for her.
Dan didn't even know how to cook, but because of his love for Gracie, he decided to give it a shot. The rest is history, but its a history I never wanted to end. And yes a bite of bittersweet too.
Amazing Grace : A Dog's Tale
Sometimes it takes a giant dog to love a heart as huge as Mark's. Emphasis on sometimes.
Uplifting story of rags to riches with tremendous hard work, diligence and vision of excellence, neatly tucked in-between the lines. All is humbly credited to a velvet muse, Gracie the Great Dane. Few people may realize the challenge of coping with a born deaf canine, but intrepid Mark doesn't hesitate. This was a great Christmas read.
It is a timely inspiration and testament to how rescuing a less than perfect puppy brings untold rewards. The blessings far outweigh the downfalls. In the end the author achieves something I've always wanted to do, work with my rescues. Don't miss the refreshing descriptors, "tail up like an antenna" or 'ear like sheets on a line' - forgive my paraphrasing. What a hoot! What a great value for a wonderful read. You are in good company with millions of pet lovers world wide. Our rescued kindreds send you tribute for championing their need.
I'm fairly sure I've heard part of the story before for the origin of Three Dog Bakery - they were on Oprah after all - but not enough to really remember details. It's a wonderful story about a man - having lost a dog companion months earlier - gets talked into just going to look at a great dane puppy that's deaf Most of us who've owned dogs, loved dogs, shared our lives with dogs know that this really only means one thing - the guy was going home with a deaf great dane puppy.
And surprise, surprise he does. It's a really nice look at how a dog can come in to our lives and change it for the better. Dan Dye says that he originally thought that he saved Gracie the dog when in fact Gracie saved him. I think thats how things work in our lives sometimes - we think we're performing some act of service when in fact it's actually reversed. Wonderful book. Need tissues of course and a heart big enough to embrace loving a great dane puppy! I have to admit: the reason I picked up this book was the title. I have a rescue dog named Gracie and it instantly caught my attention.
As I read this book I was reminded of the joys and heartaches of dog ownership. I have two dogs and both have had some scary health issues that I could not help them overcome. It amazed me to see Gracie's strength and love. Even when she struggled with anorexia, her will to live won out.
Amazing Gracie: A Dog's Tale by Andrew Demona on Prezi
The book was well written, you absolutely fell in love with Gracie. You laughed, you cried and then you smiled at the satisfaction you feel knowing that Gracie had the life that every dog deserves. What a blessing our dogs are in our lives. By the way, my dog family of six, yes six, are wonderful, beautiful and super smart; and they are all adopted and three are purebreds. This book, I read in one day! It is an absolute for anyone that has a dog, especially a Great Dane.
I had read the book from a friend -- loved the story, so I wanted the book for my own collection.
A must for every dog owner who is passionate about the relationships betweeen dogs and their families. Amid the frenzied barking and prancing of a house full of Great Danes, one pup was shivering in the corner. But when Dan Dye reached her, she struggled to her feet like a clumsy foal, raised her forehead to his, and announced, as clearly as if she had actually spoken the words, You know I'm the one.
No get me outta here! By turns funny, moving, tender, and inspiring, Gracie's tale is a treat for every dog lover. There is Gracie's first morning, racing around Dan in the snowy yard. Gracie's first determination to prove to her step-sisters, Dottie the Dalmation and Sarah the Black Lab, that she's one of the girls.
Gracie's defiant romance with a pint-size charmer named Byron, a Boston Terrier from the wrong side of the fence. Then born of necessity, the eureka moment: When Gracie's delicate constitution starts turning into anorexia, Dan teaches himself how to cook, and in three days is baking her the cookies that will spur her appetite, launch Three Dog Bakery, and transform their lives forever. And joy, above all, joy.
These qualities Gracie possessed in abundance, and shared with everyone, human or canine, who had the good fortune to cross her path. Additional Product Features Dewey Edition. Foreword vii 1. Kansas City Blues 1 2. Finding Grace 9 3.
